Those of you who are familiar with traditional styled timber rocking horses and general woodcarving in Australia may be familiar with the works of master woodcarver: Bill Lowe (Grandfa Bill)Bill has been making rocking horses by hand for over 40 years, and has been a woodcarver for over 50. He and his works have been presented on many television and newspaper/magazine features over the years.
Bill has also had his woodcarving artworks exhibited in corporate collections in some of Sydney's major buildings - eg Westfield Towers Corporate Centre (William Street CBD) and other venues such as Timbertown (Wauchope) and Old Sydney Town (Gosford). His art is held in private & corporate collections Australia wide.
No other woodcarver can match Bill in capturing the exacting features and dimensions of his subjects - in particular the detail he produces in the heads of his rocking horses. Bill is also one of the only woodcarvers to create his own Australian designed rocking horses. Many just re-create the English and European styles of yesteryear. Have a look at Bill's horses and compare them to others - judge for yourself.
Bill has been selling his creations under the name of "GRANDFA'S ROCKING HORSES" for some time now and is currently located near Goulburn in the Southern Tablelands of NSW.
He previously worked and displayed his creations at "The Woodcarving Studio" - at Taree. Grandfa Bill finds that many of his clients who have previously bought rocking horse for their children 20 - 30 years ago, eventually return to buy another one for their grand children. Grandfa's Rocking Horses truly become treasured family heirlooms.
Bill makes everything for his rocking horses himself and mostly by hand. He uses a variety of local softwoods & hardwoods in the body of the horse, and the stands or rockers. All of Grandfa Bill's horses are hand-fitted with genuine horse hair for the manes & tails. He hand-cuts the leather for saddles, stirrup straps & bridles as well. He even makes his own metal stirrups and swing bars by hand!
Outstanding!
Despite the spurious claims of others, Bill Lowe was the first to have an Australian web-site dedicated to hand-made rocking horses. "Grandfa's Rocking Horses" has spawned many imitators over the years. While some of his competitors may produce a worthwhile product, none of these "power carvers" have the hand carving experience of Grandfa.
